The Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber Origin Story

Jim founded Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber back in 2009. And, like any great business, it was started right in the backyard. Jim made the leap from the corporate world to one filled with old barns and reclaimed wood and has not looked back since. What began as deconstructing barns across the state has turned into a multi-location operation that offers a wide variety of services and products.

We offer locally sourced, premium reclaimed barn wood that we salvage from barns right here in Michigan and some of the surrounding states in the Midwest. The wood we repurpose from these barn sites is nothing like you find in a hardware store. We're talking exceptional quality hardwoods- Chestnut, Oak, Pine, Poplar, Hemlock, Walnut, Fir, and Beech. Plus, we offer live edge slabs, custom designed and made furniture, home-installations, and custom milling.

The materials we have available are perfect for carpenters, woodworkers, contractors, artists, and the person who's ready to dive into their latest DIY project. Whether you want raw materials to create something on your own or are looking for fine, handcrafted, one-of-a-kind furniture, Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber seriously has it all.

Now, we've showcased some of our favorite custom pieces in our blog. The our fully customizable counter and bar tops are just as popular, not just in private homes, but also in restaurants and bars all across the state. We'll stop there before we get too carried away, but if you are looking for inspiration or wondering what other people have commissioned, you definitely want to check out some of the other blogs (and, yes, we absolutely included tons of pictures)!

A little more about us...

We are a family owned and operated business in southeast Michigan. Yup, you read that right. Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber is actually family owned and operated. Jim is the owner, founder, and woodworker extraordinaire. He oversees all aspects of the business and actually likes to be super hands on. He prides himself on the high quality products he offers, so he stays involved in the day-to-day operations. Additionally, Jim has been in the trades for over 20 years, so he has a wealth of knowledge, not only about reclaimed barn wood, but also about woodworking and carpentry in general.

In fact, Jim's father was a woodworker and carpenter, and his pieces are in his kids and grand kids homes all throughout the Midwest. That talent for woodworking was most definitely passed down to Jim- the attention to detail, natural skill, and ability to craft something beautiful and functional.

It definitely runs in the family, because Jim and his brothers built the the house Jim and his wife raised their kids. Not to mention, he has years and years of experience working with and as a contractor, which has come in handy countless times since he started his business over 13 years ago.

Jim is joined by his son, Nicholas, who is the official "demo man" for Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber. Nicholas, just like his father, is an incredible resource for all things reclaimed barn wood. He has been working closely with his father since the very beginning, so it's safe to say he's picked up on a thing or two.

If you follow Michigan Reclaimed Barns and Lumber on Instagram or Facebook or have spoken with Jim personally, it is clear that his mission is to provide not only the highest quality product, but also what we like to call the Michigan Reclaimed Barns difference.

The Michigan Reclaimed Barns difference is built on personalized customer appointments.

Long before the days of the pandemic, Jim decided that the best way to run his business was with these one-on-one appointments. Now, you might be wondering why. And you're not the first person who's asked. So, let us set the scene for you.

How many times have you walked into a store and found yourself wandering around searching for someone to talk to? Or maybe you do find someone, but the store is super busy, so it feels like whoever you speak with is distracted? Or, worse yet, you have a specific question that no one in the store can fully answer?

We have all been there and, if we're being completely transparent, it can be so frustrating. Jim decided that offering one-on-one appointments to his customers was the perfect way to bypass the frustration and the drama. Each time a personalized appointment is booked, Jim asks (or emails) a couple of questions so he has a better idea of what that customer wants. Then, he can be prepared for the appointment.

So, basically, you schedule a one-on-one appointment that the owner prepares for. That is what we call the Michigan Reclaimed Barns difference.

As Jim likes to say, "not everything fits into a box... We offer solid solutions to unique field conditions."

If you have questions, you can contact Jim directly via email or give us a call at 734-223-0759. Or, if you're ready to book an appointment with Jim, you can pick a date and time right now.

"I came to Jim with an idea that I wanted to build some furniture using barn wood. He was awesomely helpful! He took his time to show me different wood style options, talked me through some alternatives when looking at my budget, and ultimately helped me out a ton when I realized I was one piece short to complete my project! Furniture turned out great because of the high quality and authentic barn wood from this place. The wood is the real deal, and so is Jim. Highly recommended!"
